The capital of the Tierra del Fuego region in Argentina, Ushuaia is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in their lives. Its name means the bay that penetrates from the west, which gives us an idea of the rich landscape and natural wealth that surround us.
Initially inhabited mainly by hunters and gatherers due to perpetually inclement weather, nowadays it is a town of just over 50,000 inhabitants whose main economic resource is tourism. Convicts were once sent to the region, but nowadays it is a natural park that only the most fortunate have the chance to visit.
The climate of Ushuaia is harsh due to its location on the planet; specifically, its proximity to the South Pole. Temperatures are very cold, allowing for only the development of tundra and steppelands, while the few trees that manage to hoist themselves aloft suffer winds of such force that on many occasions they grow in the direction they are blown, like flags. These winds also whip through the city during the cold months but fail to extinguish Ushuaia’s charm.
Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego have three significantly differentiated zones. The Southern zone is a mountainous region whose forests give the landscape of the most southern city in the world a slightly threatening but nevertheless benign air. The Center zone center is the transition between the mountains of the south and the steppelands of the north. The Northern zone is a level and austere plateau with a noticeably Patagonian character, including scrub-like vegetation; the region is very rich in fossilized materials. The three zones of Ushuaia offer a singular view of the Tierra del Fuego, a region that struggles between the freezing polar cold and unforgettable views to be remembered for a lifetime.
